Erikson's book Gandhi’s Truth: On the Origins of Militant Nonviolence won Erikson a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. He also wrote Young Man Luther: A Study in Psychoanalysis and Erikson continued, throughout most of his life, to heavily identify as a writer and to produce significant books and papers. His excellence in this area was acknowledge upon the publication of his extensive work on the life and personality of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi's Truth: the book earned him both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. After his retirement from Harvard in 1970, Erikson continued writing, doing research, and occasionally lecturing. For his book Gandhi’s Truth, he won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. By improving Sigmund Freud ’s case-history research methods and extending their application beyond childhood to the entire life span, Erikson became the father of contemporary psychobiographical research. Erikson won a National Book Award and a Pulitzer Prize for his fifth book entitled Gandhi’s Truth: On the Origins of Militant Nonviolence (1969).
